Recently occluded intracranial and extracranial carotid arteries. Relevance of the unstable atherosclerotic plaque.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE It is now widely accepted that thrombotic coronary artery occlusion usually follows rupture of an unstable atherosclerotic plaque. The significance of such instability in arteries supplying the brain is less well appreciated. We therefore describe the clinical and pathological features of recent, symptomatic internal carotid artery occlusion to examine the pathogenetic ro...
متن کاملA case of internal carotid artery occlusion complicating embolization of the external carotid artery system.
A case of visual disturbance by embolization through the external carotid artery (ECA) after internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion is reported. A 65-year-old female presented left ICA occlusion 14 years ago. She was admitted with acute deterioration of left visual acuity. Ophthalmologically, the retinal central artery was occluded. Cerebral angiography disclosed an irregular wall at the left ...
متن کاملIncreased FGF23 serum level is associated with unstable carotid plaque in type 2 diabetic subjects with internal carotid stenosis
BACKGROUND The object of this study was to investigate the potential role of FGF23 on plaque stability in type 2 diabetic patients with internal carotid artery stenosis. METHODS In this retrospective observational study, we analyzed FGF23 serum level in 361 type 2 diabetic patients with internal carotid artery stenosis undergoing carotid endarterectomy and in 598 diabetic controls without car...
متن کاملSystemic atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability in patients with Coronary Artery Disease with a single Whole Body [FDG]PET-CT scan
Objective(s): Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of morbimortality with over half cardiovascular events occurring in the asymptomatic population by traditional risk stratification. This preliminary study aimed to evaluate systemic plaque vulnerability in patients with prior Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) with a single Whole Body [FDG] PET-CT scan in terms of plaq...
متن کاملUltrasonic tissue characterization of vulnerable carotid plaque: correlation between videodensitometric method and histological examination
BACKGROUND To establish the correlation between quantitative analysis based on B-mode ultrasound images of vulnerable carotid plaque and histological examination of the surgically removed plaque, on the basis of a videodensitometric digital texture characterization. METHODS Twenty-five patients (18 males, mean age 67 +/- 6.9 years) admitted for carotid endarterectomy for extracranial high-gra...
